Free Internet…...not much longer, welcome net neutrality.

This is a thought provoking post from Alex Popovic in Scottsdale Arizona.  How will it change things for the average business person if you have to start paying to use the internet?  Not something I even want to think about to start off the new year.

Imagine you're getting ready to upload a Youtube video to your website about a property you were just contracted to sell.  You've spent hours filming, editing and applying the final touches to your masterpiece.  You hit upload to your Youtube account and BAM.....that'll be $1.00 pops up.

This could be what happens in the very near future.  On Tuesday a Federal appeals court struck down an FCC ruling meant to prevent an Internet Service Provider (ISP) - and who you pay for internet access - from prioritizing some website traffic over others. FCC net neutrality ruling

Suddenly, service providers are able to charge based on the content you watch or the sites you visit.  Want Youtube?  That's an extra charge.  Want Google Earth, that's an extra charge.  See where this is headed?  It was kinda like the extra fees airlines started implementing for luggage, and we all know how ridiculous that's gotten don't we?

Don't pay and you can't watch or utilize the service.  Think this will affect your marketing and SEO as a Realtor or broker, you betch ya?

You can thank Verizon Wireless and Metro PCS for the ruling too, read the timeline here.  They've had a long standing challenge to the now overturned law, and in a public statement on Verizon Wirelesses public blog the company said "It had no plans to institute any form of a tiered access program."  Yeah right!

Free Internet, not much longer, welcome net neutrality!

Good morning Debra and thanks for re-posting this one.  I had not caught it the first time around.  UGH..... I use YouTubes and internet for most of my marketing and can not imagine being nickel and  dimmed to death by it!

Have over a million views on the YouTube channel and over 750 videos working their guts out oh so so well. But paying for a service, sure. Everything online is not free and most are scrambling to monetize their platforms before they go dark. Our MLS scrape is a syndicate to sites that want to be Gate Keepers. Everyone wants to be the big box herd them in for the one stop shop, pay once ease of information transfer. It is the you bring the eats to the party and buy back better positioning of your own stuff that can get your knickers in a knot.

That's why building your own marketing rocket ships in your own back yard should be the first wave of effort, expense. And evolve with the Internet, consider other avenues if the ROI is great enough. Real estate is first and foremost a business. Your profit is often in your expenses. How well you run it with what you have for creative work ethic and dead presidents folded up in your wallet to make it razzle dazzle happen.

Hmm, sounds like cable and dish TV. The crummy still will be free, but you get to pay extra for the things you want to see.

Hello Debra. It is getting more and more difficult to just be visible online. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Debra, I know everybody is trying to monetize the internet, perhaps we'll see a lot more bundling of content. I'm sure things will be a changing.

The Internet is not Free -- I pay for my connection.  If they want to monetize Youtube sites all it will do is kill them off.  No one will pay for that.

Good Morning Debra: Consequently, there would no longer be videos going viral. It will mutate into another form of viewership. Dead.

A lot of interesting comments...and Alex you are welcome. I hope it doesn't come to this but like Kristin said we knew it would be coming sooner or later.
