Turkey Buzzards are commonly found in the Hudson Valley but usually when you see one, there are at least 10 to 15 more around close by. This was sitting in the tree right outside my deck. The picture probably doesn't do the size of the bird justice as this is probably at least 6 or 7 times the size of my dog. Now let me clarify that my dog is only 3 pounds. :-)

Debra,
We just had lunch outsie and I noticed a turkey vulture overhead and pointed it out to Ron. Then I just logged to blogs on AR and yours was right there. I have been having a synchronicity type of day...Yes these buzzards/TV's here are big. They are the size of a cat. When we lived in Napa, one of our favorite cats used to commune with the TV's and sit in a circle as they took turns to eat. i once saw her go up to a possum, smell and return back to her place. I wish I had a camera. A
Interesting. They must be looking for some food close by. I don't think Turkey Buzzards eat dogs like Eagles would, but to be safe I would keep that little guy inside. :)

Turkey Buzzard or Road Kill birds as my wife calls them are all over the Albuquerque area but I must say I've never seen one this close. In your back yards? Maybe eyeballing your 3 pound pup? Hope not! Great shot by the way.
I hope his eye isn't on me! I had a gorgeous owl outside in my yard yesterday and even with a zoom lens I couldn't get a decent picture! You did good.
Howdy and evening Debra
Debra my friend, I thing they are mighty cool looking birds. That sure is a mighty fine looking photo you took of it.
Have a good one

Debra, we have them here as well. They are beautiful when they fly. Be careful that your sweet puppy is not out there. I know eagles will take small dogs and cats....not sure on a Turkey Vultures...but I would be cautious. Great photo...we have a squirrel and I can't catch him....a cat or two and well I don't catch them...maybe as we get into spring. Have a good evening!
Debra, That is a cool shot. I have never seen anything like that as close as you got. Great shot.
Debra, that's a very impressive bird - what a great photo! I'm with the other commenters above about not letting your 3 pound pup becoming vulture vittles!
Debra, Great photo. Those birds are really interesting.
Debra, you better keep a good eye on your dog with this bird around... they are quite fascinating birds and seem pretty social as well.
Hi Debra,
Great picture and a good find. Hopefully your dog is safe. I worry about my 5 lb chihuahua as we have raptors flying around my house but my husband says she is too big and she is mean too when she needs to be. But I still worry.
Turkey Buzzards are amazing creatures, Deb. Their wingspan is incredible and when they ride the thermals-there's nothing quite as pretty.
Love the picture Debra, it does have it eye out for something no doubt. I enjoy the shows on birds of prey they are very smart creatures.
Debra, I did not know that these birds were so large, that is I guess why they are called "Turkey buzzards":)
Hi Debra, I really enjoy seeing them soaring on the updrafts in the sky. Very calming. Yet they have such keen eyes and must be checking things out on the ground from up high.

That is a beautiful picture!!!! Well done! I guess the best thing was that you were there when he was - or is it a she?
Thank you for all the comments! I don't know if this was a he or a she. It was kind of alarming that it was so close to the house - they usually travel in large packs. One time when there were about 12 in a tree outside and I didn't realize I went to walk the dog and when I realized they were there I grabbed the dog and headed back in - one swooped down after us so thank goodness she was already in my arms.
